Obituary for Mary Kaupin (Hastings)

Mary Kaupin (Hastings)
Mary Coolidge Hastings Kaupin, 81, of Enfield, CT and Wellfleet, MA, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on December 9th, after a dignified battle with cancer. Mary was born on December 25th, 1935, in Passaic, New Jersey, the daughter of Frank Coolidge and Beatrice Middleton Hastings. She grew up in Fairlawn, NJ, and graduated from Fairlawn High School in 1954. From there, she went on to further her education, completing a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire in 1958, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, and a Masters of the Arts from the Teachers College, Colombia University, in 1961. Mary met the love of her life, Richard C. Kaupin, while attending UNH, and they wed years later on November 19, 1960. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Mary’s career as a teacher spanned over twenty years, most recently teaching Home Economics in the Enfield Public School System, at both Kosciuszko and John F. Kennedy Junior High Schools. In the sixties, she put her career on hold to focus on raising her children, Todd, and triplets Scott, Jeff, and Lynne, and returned to teaching in the seventies.
Mary was passionate about education, and for many years was an active member of both local and national teacher’s associations. She was dedicated to the community, and proudly served as President of the Hazardville Grammar PTO, and held memberships in the Enfield Women’s Club, the Penelope Terry Abbey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Connecticut Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Beta Sigma Phi and Alpha Delta Kappa sororities, and the Twin Mother’s Club.
Mary entered a well-deserved retirement in 1995. At that time Mary and Dick purchased a second home in Wellfleet, where she summered during her youth. Over the years on Cape Cod they acquired countless friends and made great memories. Mary bestowed her love of Cape Cod with her adoring ‘Mod Squad’, a large group of friends and family, who now share her love of Wellfleet.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and her son Jeffrey.
Mary is survived by her husband, Richard, her children Todd Kaupin and fiancé Terry Miller-Jean of Somers, Scott Kaupin of Enfield, and Lynne Kaupin Fox and her husband Alaric of Willington, CT. She also leaves behind her sister Ann Tumser Branigan and her husband Alan of California, and sister-in-law Patricia Caillouette of New Hampshire. She was the proud Grammy to Chase, Amanda, and Ryan. She remains in the thoughts and prayers of many relatives in California and across New England. She will be deeply missed by one of her dearest friends, Connie Provencher, of Enfield, who became like a second daughter to her.
Mary’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday December 14th, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, Enfield. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 15th at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment in the Hazardville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mary’s honor.
